Wayanad is a lovely little gem in the state of Kerala. While it boasts abundant wildlife and verdant forests, it also has a distinct heritage that is unique. Beginning with the pre-historic paintings within the Edakkal Caves, this region is said to have had a diverse history through the years. Wayanad has been ruled by several rulers including the Rajas of the Veda tribe, the Pazhassi Rajahs of Kottayam, Hyder Ali, and Tipu Sultan, among others. While there are various heritage sites to visit in Wayanad, the Sulthan Bathery is a must-visit tourist place in Wayanad during your family holiday.
Believed to have been built in the 13th century, this Jain temple is known because of its varied history. Its foremost use was as a shrine post, which it served as an area of commerce. It was also used by Tipu Sultan as a place for storing ammunition. Sulthan Bathery has so much varied history and it is surely an amazing place to introduce your children to this vast heritage. Decorated with gorgeous plants and sitting pretty on lush lawns, this monument is one of national importance and is a must-see place to visit in Wayanad.
It is made of granite stone and displays a strong influence of architecture from the Vijaynagar period. This place is a good example for introducing your children to different ancient Indian architectural styles. The top walls of the temple are adorned with lovely cornices and a calming open verandah, which leads to the temple’s inner sanctum that houses the granite slab displaying the carving of Mahavir Jain. It is also an interesting place to learn about the Jain settlers, who stayed on here for four centuries starting from the 12th century onwards.
The entry to this temple is free of cost.
The temple is open all days of the week from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
The best season to visit Sulthan Bathery is from October to March.
In addition to Sulthan Bathery, you can introduce your kids to many of Wayanad’s other heritage sites, too.
