Nestled in the glorious Arabian Sea are the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, a Union territory rich in history and spectacular in its geography. An incredibly popular tourist destination, the gateway to this paradise on Earth is its capital city, Port Blair.

Whether you are on an adventure trip or looking for a romantic getaway or both!, you will find something to your liking in Port Blair. Let’s look at the different places to visit in Port Blair on your next holiday:

Ross Island

Once known as ‘Paris of the East,’ Ross Island still holds some of the charms of the bygone era. Once you pay the entrance fee for the island, you will be greeted with swinging palm and coconut trees, mesmerising teal waters, and pre-independence English ruins.

Get ready for some more of Nature with rabbits, peacocks, and deer running wild! You can walk around the island or hire an electric car to move freely. Interesting fact: the island is officially called the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island, given the island’s connection to the freedom fighter!

Cellular Jail

A bit grim and inspiring at the same time, this is one of the most exciting places to see in Port Blair if you are a history buff. Serving as a prison for Indian political prisoners during the pre-Independence period, ‘Kala Pani’ or Cellular Jail now serves as a monument in honour of those freedom fighters.

When you’re taking a walk around the complex, make sure you pay attention to the plaques detailing the complete history of the place, along with the architecture of the jail, which is somewhat genius and cruel.

Jolly Buoy Island

Make the most of your trip to Port Blair by resolving all the fear you may have of being underwater. When you head to the Jolly Buoy Island, you WILL want to go snorkelling and spend quality time with the rich marine life.

Make sure you acquire the permit to do so from the authorities in advance. If diving into the water is not your thing, don’t worry. Take the glass-bottomed boat on your way to the island and catch a glimpse of the incredible aquatic life. The only thing-  Buoy is open only six months a year. Check with the local authorities before you add the island to your itinerary.

Chidiya Tapu & Munda Pahad Beach

A relaxing picnic at the beach that ends with catching the gorgeous sunset is what everyone dreams of living. You can get that more at Chidiya Tapu.

If avian life interests you, make sure you brush up on your knowledge of the species that grace these islands because you are sure to spot many of them!

Radhanagar Beach

One of the beaches of Havelock Island, Radhanagar beach, is the epitome of pristine. You don’t need to be Michael Phelps to take a dip into the gentle turquoise blue waters, so make sure you carry a change of clothes!

Mount Harriet National Park

You know the place is worth visiting when you realise it has made its way onto the national currency! Home to the Negrito people, the endangered Andaman wild pigs, and many species of butterflies, the National Park is a great place to feel one with Nature.

Your Port Blair sightseeing is incomplete without visiting Mount Harriet, the third-highest peak in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

What is the best time to visit Port Blair?

It is best to avoid a trip to Port Blair during the monsoon because the island city receives a lot of rain, and the tidal waves can get very high and strong. Plan your island holiday  between October- May when the climate is pleasant, and you can happily engage in adventure sports or laze on the beach sun-bathing.
