Located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand is Jim Corbett National Park, known for the majestic and swift tigers. Part of Corbett Tiger Reserve, the park was established in 1936 and is known as the most prestigious and oldest national park in India. It is also held in high esteem because of the launch of Project Tiger in 1973.
The park is spread across 520 square kilometers and is filled with hills, grasslands, riverine belts, marshy depressions, and a large lake that make your trip very picturesque. Nature watches and Corbett safaris are best enjoyed on four-wheel jeeps or elephant backs here. It’s one of the best places to enjoy wildlife safaris with family in India.
Sal, Khair, and Sissoo are the most common trees found in the Corbett National Park. There are also some areas in the forest that are filled with bamboo trees. In addition, eucalyptus, silver oak, jacaranda, teak, and bottlebrush trees are abound here, making sure your kids learn all about the diverse flora. Apart from tigers, you and your kids will enjoy spotting otters, crocodiles, and 650 species of resident and migratory birds on a Corbett jungle safari, which costs INR 4,500 per jeep (for a maximum of 6 people). It is recommended that you book your weekend safari 30 days in advance as there are only 60 vehicles allowed in the park at a time.
Here are the various zones in the park:
This is popular with tourists because of its open grasslands and is only 1km from Ramnagar city.
Located 16km from Ramnagar city, this zone is very popular for tourists and is open all-year round.
This is a new eco-tourism zone in the park that’s open to tourists. Located about 13km from Ramnagar city, it’s filled with abundant flora and fauna.
It’s the largest and most diverse zone in the park. It’s 18km from Ramnagar city and is known for its exotic wildlife.
This zone is a haven for birding enthusiasts. Its entry gate is 36km from Ramnagar city on the north-eastern boundary of the park.
Although it doesn’t get included in the tiger reserve area, it’s a very serene place to soak in the natural beauty of the park. Also, have a look at other popular tourist places for sightseeing in Corbett during your family vacation.
October to February is the best time to visit the park for tiger spotting and bird-watching. During summers, from March to mid-June, it’s best for river rafting and animal spotting. During monsoons, specifically July to September, it is great for trekking.
