If you are looking out for a great family vacation in and around Nainital, you should definitely opt for a safari at the Corbett National Park. Imagine exploring a deep lush forest, sitting by a bonfire, or even coming face-to-face with a tiger! You will find all this and more, here.
The Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park in India. It was founded in 1936. The 520-square-kilometer park is most popularly known as the home of the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger. However, the national park also shelters other rare and endangered species like otters, the fish-eating crocodile, elephant, different species of deer, and over 650 species of birds.
There are two types of jungle safaris in five different zones. The types of safaris are:
• Jeep safari (Maximum six people per Jeep)
• Canter safari (Maximum 16 people per Canter)
The reserve has been divided into different zones; each, with its different entry gate for better tourist management. These are:
• Dhikala Zone (Open from 15th November to 15th June)
• Bijrani Zone (Open from 15th October to 30th June)
• Durga Devi Zone (Open from 15th November to 15th June)
• Jhirna Zone (Open throughout the year, subject to weather conditions)
• Dhela Zone (Open throughout the year, subject to weather conditions)
• Sitabani Forest Zone, Buffer Zone (Open throughout the year)
The best time to visit the park for your family vacation is between November and June. The park is closed in the months from July to October. This is because the roadways within the park tend to get washed away due to the heavy rainfall. In winters, the weather is cool and delightful. At this time, a forest safari through this lush and beautiful jungle is perfect for everyone. On the other hand, the summers here can reach a high of 42 °Celsius. For those who can bear the heat, this period is the best for spotting animals that are otherwise elusive in the dense forests.
The national park is well-connected by road. The nearest town is Ramnagar at mere 15km away. You may hire a private taxi from here. The place also has a railway station where a direct train runs from Delhi.
The national park has a number of lodges and resorts where one can stay. One of the most popular resorts here is the Club Mahindra Corbett resort. The resort is located on the banks of the Kosi River and near the splendid view of the wonderful Corbett waterfall.
