Ooty is a beautiful little hill station located in Tamil Nadu. There is so much to see here that you will be spoilt for choice. Be it the sparkling lakes, stunning waterfalls, or other beautiful water bodies; you definitely have to explore just about everything here. First on your list, though, should be its pristine water bodies.
Here is a list of the gorgeous water bodies in and around Ooty:
The Ooty Lake figures in many places to see in Ooty lists. This artificial lake was formed in the year 1824 by John Sullivan, the then Collector of Coimbatore. During the Ooty Summer Festival held in May, you and the kids may enjoy the festivities by watching the numerous boat races and pageants held here.
The Avalanche Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in Ooty. They say that sometimes beauty comes from a place of pain. So was the case with this gorgeous lake too. It was created out of a very heavy landslide that occurred in the early 1800s. Every year, the South-Indian monsoons are a cause for joy as it fills up this lake. Over the course of several years, the waters of the Avalanche have attracted a wide variety of birds that kids would love to get a glimpse of!
The trip to the Kamaraj Sagaris extremely picturesque with the ghat road that is surrounded by lush vegetation, making it a very good place to go for long, picturesque drives. The reservoir is known to be full of trout.
Pykara Lake is surrounded by the best Mother Nature can offer. Here you will witness the Toda settlements located near fenced Sholas and green grassy meadows. You may also go on a boating trip at this lake. The waterfalls nearby add to the beauty.
The Kalhatty Falls are 100 feet high and found on the Kalhatty Slopes. This place is perfect for bird watching and you and the kids may even spot animals like bison, panthers, spotted deer, Sambar deer, and more.
The St. Catherine Waterfall is a double cascading waterfall. At 250 feet high, it is the second highest waterfall in the Nilgiri Mountains. This waterfall was previously known as Geddhehaada Hallaor Foot Hills River.
This is the highest waterfall in the Nilgiris and the third largest waterfall in Tamil Nadu. It has two reservoirs built one above the other. The Katery Falls are also the site of the first hydroelectric plant in India. The gorgeous scenery and panoramic views are another reason why you should visit this place with your kids as it makes for a great spot for fun photographs! Apart from waterfalls there are various other beautiful places in Ooty like Doddabetta and Madhumalai National park which should not be missed.
