Tarkarli is a remote coastal village in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district. It is located just 4.2 km away from Malvan town. Tarkarli is mainly famous as a beach destination. Additionally, the place also has a scuba diving training centre where you can undertake different scuba diving courses.
There are many tourist places in Tarkarli you can see during your stay here.

It is one of the most famous Tarkarli Beaches, where the Karli river meets the Arabian sea. The water at the Tarkarli beach is so clean and clear that one can see the 20 feet-deep sea bed on a sunny day. Apart from enjoying the natural sea view, you can also indulge in scuba diving near Tarkarli Beach under the supervision of trained diving instructors.

Malvan beach is one of the best tourist places to visit near Tarkarli. It can be an ideal place to enjoy a walk along the seaside and discover popular local cuisines to satisfy your taste buds. Don’t miss the beautiful Malvan Wildlife Sanctuary situated near the beach. The sanctuary is home to diverse coral and marine life.

The Sindhudurg island fort is located just off the coast of Malvan. The 17th-century Maratha King Shivaji built the fort to counter the rising influence of colonial powers like the English and Portuguese. The construction of the fort has some Portuguese influence.
The historic fort is one of the famous places to visit in Malvan and can also be visited from Tarkarli beach.

Spread over about 10 acres, the Dhamapur lake behind the Dhamapur Dam is one of the biggest lakes in the Sindhudurg district. The lake remains full throughout the year, making it one of the popular tourist places to visit in Tarkarli. The calm and serene lake surrounded by hills can be an ideal place to spend some quality time with loved ones.
You can go boating on the lake waters or choose to relax at the lakeside admiring the natural beauty of the place. You can also visit the Bhagwati temple situated near the lake.
The temple dedicated to Chatrapati Shivaji is believed to be built by his second son Rajaram in 1695. Apart from Shivaji’s shiny black stone idol, the temple also has his palm and footprints. Located near the Tarkarli beach, Shiv Chatrapati temple serves as an inspiration to the admirers and followers of the great king.

Travel Tip You can plan a Tarkarli visit as an extension of your Goa tour. The place is well connected with Panaji. For instance, you can stay at Club Mahindra Assonora, a lovely resort in the quaint village of Assonora in North Goa, and explore the local places first. Tarkarli is about 89 km from here and can be reached within two and half hours by driving on the NH 66. |
When it comes to visiting India’s coastal areas, Tarkarli might not be on the radar of tourists outside Maharashtra. However, one visit to Tarkarli can make you wonder why you haven’t visited the place before. So, plan a visit to Tarkarli before it becomes too populated or commercialised.
