Among all temples in Udaipur, seekers of spirituality revere the 350-year-old shrine of a dancing Lord Ganesh. Mahalakshmi Temple was built by Maharana Shambhu Singh. He fought a battle and brought back idols of Mahalakshmi, Sundar Vinayak, and Rishabhdev from the war and later enshrined them. One of the majestic temples in Udaipur, this shrine dedicated to the highly revered goddess of wealth and prosperity stands testimony to Udaipur heritage and the architectural marvels of the Mewar clan. It is visited by both commoners and royalty alike. During Diwali, devotees gather here from Dhanteras to Annakut to receive special divine blessings.
Days to visit: Sunday and Friday, in particular
Also popular as the Vaishno Devi of Mewar, the Neemach Mata is the main deity atop a hill. You can choose to climb the hill along its slope or take the steps. Neemach Mata is the goddess of the royal Maharana clan. Special pujas are performed on the Navaratras of Chaitra and Ashwin, Diwali, Dusshera, and other festival days. This is one of the important temples in Udaipur, and devotees consider it a blessing to be able to witness the aarti, and believe in the miraculous healing power of Neemach Mata. The spectacular view of the city from the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake only adds to the blissful experience.
This heritage temple in Udaipur was built by Maharaja Raj Singh in the 17th century. Legend has it that the Maharaja was plagued with an incurable eye disease. A great devotee of Amba Mata, he was advised to journey to the Amba Mata temple in Gujarat and seek a cure. However, the goddess appeared in his dream and dissuaded him from making the journey, and indicated a nearby location to him instead. True enough, he found an idol of his favourite deity on reaching the spot and also regained his vision. The king built a beautiful temple and enshrined the idol. Installed in all splendour with golden lions guarding her on either side, this goddess is believed to grant blessings.
