With the Indian Government enforcing a 21-day Covid-19 lockdown in the country due to the increase in Coronavirus cases, every person is forced to stay indoors to allow the administration to fight the virus. This viral disease is highly contagious and it shows initially mild symptoms in humans like cough, headache and fever. The latest Coronavirus travel advice for every country is to ensure a near-lockdown to contain the virus’s spread.
Meanwhile, you and your family are looking for ways to stay amused and upbeat during the COVID-19 lockdown – and there’s nothing better than watching films together to achieve this aim.
But you spend so much time looking for films and shows on Netflix, and other OTT platforms, that you end up watching nothing. We decided to help you out: these are our recommendations for fun movies on Netflix – chill with the family with these amazing movies.
#1 Game Night. This comedy of errors – a game night planned elaborately with live props and a murder mystery around missing loot – will have you in stitches throughout. The Jason Bateman – Rachel McAdams starrer has all the ingredients for a classic whodunit with dollops of humour thrown in. It also underlines how game night is a fun indoor activity, and inspires you and your family to have a game night!
#2 Golmaal. This 1979 Hrishikesh Mukherjee comedy is a cult classic for all. Children today will also love watching this film, peppered as it is with jokes, unlikely situations, a story built on lies and above all, sterling performances by Utpal Dutt, Dina Pathak and Amol Palekar. A young accountant gets a job by lying about himself to impress the boss, and this lands him in a never-ending saga of more and more lies till he finds it difficult to extricate himself. A must-watch laugh riot for the family.
#3 Dil Chahta Hai. Farhan Akhtar launched himself into the big leagues with this road trip film about three best friends who end up going separate ways. It was the start of the road trip genre for Hindi cinema, but nothing anyone has made after this – whether it is Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milega Dobara or the more recent Irrfan starrer Caravan – comes close to the magic, humour and pathos of this directorial.
#4 Julie & Julia. A heart-warming story about two women – one the legendary cook Julie Child and the other, a girl-next-door Julie inspired by Julia – whose lives do not directly connect except for their passion for food, this one is a must for those families that enjoy cooking together. It underlines how deeply cooking and food touch our daily lives. Whether you are on home quarantine or simply staying home at this time, this Meryl Streep starrer will put a smile on your face.
#5 The Big Short. This one might seem like a serious film about the economic recession of 2007-2008, especially due to its top heavy cast (Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Marisa Tomei) – but it is a comedy drama about how stock markets are made to tumble. The film explores how the recession between 2008 and 2010 was triggered by America’s realty bubble. Informative, snappy and humorous, it will keep the family riveted to the last frame.
