Good News for Senior Citizens - Air India Announces 50 Percent Concession on Airfare

The coronavirus pandemic brought all our travel plans to a standstill in 2020l. Young or old, travelling local or international, all our holidays had to be cancelled this year. But the world is slowly making its way back to being normal. While new and much-needed safety guidelines are in effect, travelling for holidays is a possibility again. To make it a more pleasant and memorable experience for senior citizens, Air India has announced a special scheme for them.

Air India’s New Scheme for Senior Citizens

Air India has come up with a new scheme for senior citizens. For senior citizens above the age of 60 can now enjoy booking tickets at 50% concession on the base fare on domestic flights! As per the Air India website, there is a particular criteria that needs to be met to avail this special offer. The tickets should be booked for “a Senior citizen of Indian Nationality, permanently residing in India and should have attained the age of 60 years on the date of commencement of journey”.

What’s more, those looking to book tickets on domestic flights while keeping in mind the 50% concession offer, need to also keep in mind that the concession is being given only on “select booking classes in the Economy cabin”. Also, the total amount of a flight ticket is not just the base fare. According to the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the total cost of airfare also includes the airline fuel charge, common user terminal fee, passenger service fees, airport and/or user development fees taxes, and any other applicable convenience charges.

In order to avail the concession offer, interested passengers will have to produce a valid Photo ID with date of birth written on it -  voter’s ID card, passport, driving license, or the senior citizens’ ID card issued by Air India. “In case the relevant ID/documents are not presented at the time of check-in or at the boarding gate, the basic fare will be forfeited and the tickets will become non-refundable.”

Passengers will be required to travel to any part of India but will have to purchase the ticket at least three days before departure. No discount available on  any children travelling along but there is a discount available for one infant (below two years of age).
