Kanha, which was inaccessible to most tourists in the past, can be reached easily through different means of transport. Kanha by rail can be accessed through 3 different railway stations which is at an average of 200 kms away. You can also reach Kanha by road easily with cab, or private taxi from nearest cities. Kanha, one of the most famous national parks in India, is famous for its tiger reserve. Located amidst the dense forests of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha came into existence in 1955 and its tiger reserve was set up in 1976. The lush green forest with beautiful streams running through it is thought to have inspired Rudyard Kipling’s famous novel The Jungle Book.
It is in the Mandla and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh, falling on the Maikal hills of the Satpura ranges. Here’s how to reach Kanha on your trip to Madhya Pradesh:
Nagpur in Maharashtra is the nearest big airport to Kanha National Park, at a distance of 266 km. It is well-connected to almost all domestic airports in India. Guests can also reach the park from Jabalpur airport, which is 177 km away.

Jabalpur, Nagpur, and Gondia, which are located 177 km, 266 km, and 200 km respectively from Kanha National Park, have rail links connecting to various parts of India. The journey from Jabalpur to Kanha takes three hours, and from Nagpur it is about five hours.

Daily buses to Kanha are available from Jabalpur, Nagpur, Bilaspur, and Raipur. Taxis and private cab services are there too. Cars can be hired for a tour of Kanha National Park. For the more adventurous, driving to Kanha in one’s own car is also now possible.

Kanha National Park offers a variety of activities. There are jungle safaris in the core zones that are home to different species, including the elusive tiger. There are nature walks for those who want to experience the calming force of nature. One can also go birding, as the park is home to over 250 species of birds.
A trip to Kanha is also an excellent time to experience the cuisine of Madhya Pradesh, as the state’s history and culture are reflected in its food. Start your mornings with hot poha and freshly made jalebis. No trip to Madhya Pradesh is complete without tasting its famous dal bati, a simple steamed dish that’s served with a delicious dal or kadhi.
