Covid-19 is finally bidding us adieu. Countries worldwide are setting up new rules to welcome international visitors amidst the still undergoing Coronavirus pandemic. Travel tourism is opening up as Coronavirus vaccination is easing off health-related tensions.
People around the globe are beginning to consider domestic and international travel. If you too are planning for an international trip, you got to know about the current international travel rules that focus on Covid-19 precaution.
The kind of Covid-19 tests required for your international travel depends on the place you are travelling to. The international travel guidelines are in place to limit the spread of new coronavirus variants.
Many countries around the world demand a recent negative test from incoming travellers. For example, the US is accepting results from two kinds of tests. One of the tests detect the genetic material of the virus and is a more sensitive type of test. The other is the rapid test that looks for viral proteins called antigens. Any one of the tests must have been taken no more than three days before leaving for the US.
Health professionals usually take sensitive lab tests using a nasal swab. The test results come in a day or two. At the same time, rapid tests have a turnaround time of just 15 to 30 minutes. They are increasingly being used to screen people at offices, schools, testing sites, and nursing homes. Also, you can swab yourself at home for some rapid tests.
For either test, the US requires an electronic or printed proof of the negative test report from medical laboratory. So, even if you plan to get the faster rapid test, you still have to get documentation done from a health care provider.
England also has a similar setup as it accepts results from both kinds of tests. However, England’s health authorities are imposing some additional requirements, like the tests must meet certain thresholds for accuracy. If you are travelling to England, you need to check and make sure your test results meet the standards.
After the many countries started instituted varying requirements, the European Union officials have agreed to standardise the Covid test requirements across their 27-nation bloc.
