An increase in coronavirus cases has led Sikkim to impose strict curfews, travel restrictions, and mandatory RT PCR tests for entry into the state. The decision has been taken to combat the rise of mutant coronavirus cases.

Sikkim is aiming to bring the number of coronavirus cases down to a single-digit. To achieve that Sikkim government has enforced travel restrictions for travellers from Maharashtra, Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

Any person coming to Sikkim from these 5 states would have to carry a recent RT PCR negative to be submitted within 72 hours of reaching Sikkim. Note that a Rapid Antigen Test will not be valid for entry into Sikkim.

According to a media platform report, the Health Department of Sikkim will send officials to Siliguri to check individuals coming from the 5 states. The whereabouts of people coming to Siliguri is generally not known. Thus a mechanism is to be established for scrutiny of such people entering the state, which was to be discussed with the Chief Secretary yesterday as per the Principal Secretary of Health, K Sreenavasansulu.

Similar restrictions will be imposed at Pakyong Airport of Sikkim. The state already has a medical team at Pakyong. Moreover, the state has taken SpiceJet Airlines into confidence to effectuate restrictions on individuals travelling to Sikkim without the RT PCR negative test report. Individuals without the negative certificate won’t be allowed to board the plane as per K Sreenavasansulu.
