You have decided on the best adventure place for your next holiday, have your tickets booked, and are done with the work deadlines, great! Now all that remains is probably the most tedious task, i.e., packing for the trip.

There is a chance that you might be a seasoned traveller or a hardcore Marie Kondo fan and know all the tricks of the travel packing trade, but if you are not, here are eight items that need to make it to your travel packing list:

A light and robust travel backpack

You may have a 20kg capacity suitcase that you take to your travel destination. However, make sure you also have a compact and lighter backpack or maybe a 10/20/30 litre capacity that you can carry on your treks and hikes.

It’s even better if your backpack has multiple pockets/compartments. It is difficult and impractical to open a bag with just one big compartment, only to remove one small item from the bottom of the backpack. If you are going for a multiple-day trek to maybe Ladakh or Himachal Pradesh, you may want to carry a single bag with a bigger space so that you can easily move around instead of taking multiple smaller bags.

First aid kit

Whether you are going on a difficult trek on treacherous terrain across the Chadar Trek with your friends or a simple hike through Uttarakhand with your family, your travel checklist must include a first aid kit. Make sure you include sterile gauze and creams that alleviate the pain from bruises and scrapes in your first aid box.

It would help if you also had paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain relief and antibacterial ointments for more serious issues such as animal bites. Think ahead about what you may encounter on your adventure holiday and prepare accordingly. There is no harm in preparing for unfortunate scenarios, is there?

Headlamp and/or torch

Fancy going spelunking or on a night trek looking for fireflies. Pack a headlamp so that you can walk through the forest with both hands free to move the pesky branches out of the way! Pack in a spare set of batteries for your torch for good measure.

Hygiene products

Adventure travel is no excuse for poor hygiene, as much as the younger kids in the travel group may believe so! Pack your usual toiletries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, soaps, sanitisers, and menstrual products

Multifunctional shoes

It’s a good idea to invest in multipurpose shoes, which can be used for walking, jumping bungee jumping, hiking, or even walking through snow. Opt for waterproof shoes if there is a chance that it might rain where you’re going, or you think you will have to walk through streams.

Sun protection paraphernalia

Whether you are going paragliding in Kerala or trekking through the Spiti circuit, you will face a scorching sun. Protect your skin from the UV rays by packing in enough sunscreen. Be liberal with how much you pack because this is one item that can cause a great deal of damage if not used enough.

Throw in a moisture-wicking cap for good measure, too. Get a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes and keep you from constantly squinting due to the sun’s glare.

Pro tip: get a retainer for your sunglasses as it is very easy to lose them otherwise.

Quick-drying clothes

Check out any activewear brands, and you will easily find some t-shirts, pants, and undergarments with moisture-wicking or quick-drying properties. You will need such clothes when you’re in the middle of a 7-day trek exploring the Himalayas or engaging in beach/water sports. Another reason you should get these clothes is that they are light weight, making them easier to carry.

Multitool

Anyone who has been on an adventurous trek or hike will tell you that a multitool is one of the first things you add to your vacation checklist. A multitool can help you with various tasks, such as setting up the tent for an overnight trek and opening canned goods. If you are going to your vacation destination by flight, put your multitool in the checked-in luggage.
