Neatly stacked rows of tulips of various colours with their bulbs popping up like small, brightly-coloured heads. A sight so steeped in innocence, that it draws a smile from the innermost recesses of your being. Such a sight awaits you at the Tulip Festival in Srinagar, held every year at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, also known as Siraj Bagh. In 2024, the Tulip Festival will be held from 1st April to 20th April. You should visit the festival not just if you happen to be an anthophile, tulip lover and nature lover, but also because it’s a wonderful opportunity to get a glimpse of the rich culture, cuisine and crafts of Kashmir, all of which will be on display during the festival.
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, also known as Siraj Bagh, is the largest tulip garden in Asia, spread across almost 74 acres. It is stretched out leisurely on the foothills of Zabarwan Range (a sub mountain range between Pir Panjal Range and Great Himalayan Range) on the banks of the fabulous Dal Lake. The garden is home to over 60 varieties of early, mid and late blooming tulips, although other species of flowers like hyacinths, ranunculus and daffodils have been added over the years, thus enriching its richness.
