India’s rich coastal cuisine receives global recognition with two of its iconic dishes earning spots on TasteAtlas’ ranking of the Top 50 Seafood Dishes in the World.

Kerala’s Karimeen Pollichathu secured the 11th position, while Bengal’s Chingri Malai Curry was ranked 30th, celebrating the nation’s diverse seafood traditions. Karimeen Pollichathu, a classic from Kerala, is prepared using Karimeen or pearl spot fish, the official state fish.
The delicacy is famed for its layered preparation — the fish is first fried, then marinated in a spiced masala blend, wrapped in banana leaves, and finally pan-fried or grilled. This unique method infuses the fish with smoky, tangy, and spicy notes, making it one of the most beloved dishes of Kerala’s backwater cuisine.
On the eastern coast, Bengal’s Chingri Malai Curry (or Prawn Malai Curry) represents a contrasting yet equally rich tradition. Made with prawns cooked in creamy coconut milk, flavored with turmeric, ginger, garlic, onions, and garam masala, the dish is typically finished with ghee or mustard oil. TasteAtlas notes that the “malai” element may have been influenced by historical trade with Malaysia, highlighting the dish’s global culinary connections.
The global seafood ranking reflects a wide spectrum of traditions, with Finland’s Loimulohi—salmon or rainbow trout slow-cooked on wooden planks over an open fire—claiming the top spot. Japan’s Kaisendon, a rice bowl topped with fresh sashimi, took second place, while Indonesia’s Batagor, fried fish dumplings served with spicy peanut sauce, ranked third.
The recognition of Karimeen Pollichathu and Chingri Malai Curry underscores how India’s seafood heritage continues to capture global attention, blending centuries-old techniques with bold flavors that resonate far beyond its shores.
