In a significant move aimed at boosting regional tourism and sustainable development, the Dharoi Dam in Gujarat is set to undergo a remarkable transformation into a sustainable tourism hub.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Gujarat state government, aims to turn Dharoi Dam into a central hub, linking key sites such as Vadnagar, Taranga, Ambaji, and Rani Ki Vav, all within a 90 km radius. Located on the Sabarmati River, Dharoi Dam has long been a crucial source of water for irrigation and drinking purposes in the region. However, recognizing its potential as a tourist destination, the government has outlined an ambitious plan to develop the area while ensuring environmental sustainability.
The proposed transformation planned in three phases has an estimated budget of INR 1100 crore. The project will include the creation of an Adventure Water Sports Arena, an innovative River Edge Development Leisure Show Infrastructure featuring an Amphitheatre, and several themed parks, such as Panchatatva Park and Naad Brahm Upavan. In addition to this, a Visitor Centre and a Water Experience Park are part of the proposal, aimed at enriching the visitor experience and offering diverse recreational activities.
Additionally, the project aims to involve local communities, providing them with employment opportunities and encouraging the promotion of local culture and crafts. Nature trails and trekking paths will be developed to allow tourists to explore the rich biodiversity of the area, with guided tours available to educate visitors on the local flora and fauna.
Adventure sports enthusiasts will also find a host of activities to engage in, such as kayaking, zip-lining, and rock climbing. These activities will be designed to ensure safety while promoting eco-friendly practices. Additionally, bird-watching spots and photography points will be established to attract nature lovers and photographers.
The development project also emphasizes the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the region. Local artisans and craftsmen will be encouraged to showcase their work, providing tourists with authentic cultural experiences and supporting the local economy.
The Dharoi Dam sustainable tourism hub is expected to attract a diverse range of visitors, from eco-tourists and adventure seekers to families and cultural enthusiasts. By promoting sustainable tourism practices, the project aims to create a model for future developments in the region, balancing economic growth with environmental conservation. This initiative marks a significant step towards making Gujarat a premier destination for sustainable tourism in India.
