Eravikulam National Park in Kerala shares the top position with Dachigam National Park as one of India’s top national parks in India.

 Eravikulam and Dachigam National Park

In a major recognition for conservation excellence, Eravikulam National Park in Kerala and Dachigam National Park in Jammu & Kashmir have jointly emerged as the top performers in India’s Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) 2025 of protected areas. Scoring a remarkable 92.97%, the two parks surpassed 438 other national parks and wildlife sanctuaries across the country.

The evaluation, based on global IUCN-WCPA standards, assessed 438 protected forest areas across India, spotlighting Kerala as a leading state in national park management. These included anti-poaching measures, disabled-friendly infrastructure, carbon-negative initiatives, and scientific management strategies.
Eravikulam National Park, nestled in the Western Ghats, is known for its thriving population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, and its spectacular once-in-12-years Neelakurinji bloom. The park has been lauded for its climate-resilient infrastructure, inclusive eco-tourism programs, and commitment to preserving high-altitude shola-grassland ecosystems.

In contrast, Dachigam National Park, located near Srinagar, plays a pivotal role in the protection of the critically endangered Hangul deer. It also conserves rich Himalayan biodiversity spread across alpine meadows, riverine forests, and sub-alpine zones. Strategic habitat management and robust community involvement have contributed significantly to its success.

This dual recognition is a milestone, setting a benchmark for ecological stewardship and sustainable park management nationwide.
