Digha, the popular seaside resort town in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district, is all set to witness the grand inauguration of a majestic new Lord Jagannath temple.

Jagannath Temple in West Bengal

Spread across 20 acres, the temple has been developed at a cost of ₹250 crore and, is a magnificent replica of the iconic 12th-century Jagannath shrine in Puri, Odisha. The inauguration will be led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and is expected to draw thousands of devotees and tourists from across the state and beyond.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to commence at 2:30 p.m. on 29th April, following a two-day Maha Yajna ahead of the Prana Pratistha (consecration ceremony), aligned with the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya on Tuesday and Wednesday. The event marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to blend spirituality with tourism and cultural development.

Dubbed the Jagannath Dham Sanskriti Kendra, the temple has been developed under the aegis of the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO). With the launch of this temple, Digha is expected to gain international recognition not just as a beachside retreat, but also as a spiritual destination of high cultural value.

The town has undergone a stunning transformation in anticipation of the event. Painted in blue and white — the signature colors of the West Bengal government — Digha is adorned with decorative lights, and roads leading to the temple have been beautifully illuminated. Local infrastructure has seen significant upgrades, and authorities have issued clear instructions to ensure smooth arrangements for the influx of pilgrims and tourists.

With the temple's inauguration, Digha is poised to become a major confluence of tourism, spirituality, and harmony, reflecting the evolving identity of West Bengal's coastal jewel.
