The Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum in Gujarat has been shortlisted for the prestigious UNESCO Prix Versailles Award 2024. This recognition is a significant honor, celebrating architectural excellence, cultural significance, and the innovative design of public spaces.

Commemorating the devastating 2001 earthquake that struck Bhuj with 7.7 magnitude taking around 13000 lives and leaving 67,000 injured, the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum holds memories from the past symbolizing human resilience and hope.

This structure in Gujarat ranks among the seven remarkable museums and has been competing for the esteemed Prix Versailles Award – presented each year to structures characterizing exceptional architecture and design on a global scale.

Sprawling across 470 acres, the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum's design is notable for its thoughtful use of space and materials. The museum's layout guides visitors through a journey of reflection and learning, with exhibits detailing the events of the earthquake, the subsequent relief efforts, and the rebuilding process. Interactive displays and personal stories of survivors add a deeply human element to the museum, making it a poignant educational experience.

The shortlisting of the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum for the Prix Versailles Award 2024 is a testament to its architectural brilliance and cultural significance. It underscores the role of such memorials in honoring past tragedies while inspiring future generations through stories of resilience and recovery. The final award winners will be announced in November this year, and the Smritivan Museum’s nomination has already brought it international acclaim.
