Haryana government launches Mahabharata Circuit aimed to elevate Kurukshetra and other nearby historical sites carrying mythological significance.

Haryana’s government has launched an ambitious project to revitalize key historic sites in Kurukshetra, a city steeped in the lore of the Mahabharata, under a major tourism initiative called the ‘Mahabharata Circuit.’ Known as the battleground for the epic Kurukshetra War and the place where Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita, Kurukshetra holds profound religious and cultural significance, attracting millions of pilgrims and history enthusiasts every year. The state plans to enhance the city’s appeal by improving infrastructure, accessibility, and showcasing its rich mythological heritage for a more immersive visitor experience.

The Mahabharata Circuit development will breathe new life into historical sites across Kurukshetra, Karnal, and Panipat. Additional destinations included are the Brahma Sarovar, a revered waterbody tied to Lord Brahma; the Sri Krishna Museum, which exhibits artifacts from Lord Krishna's life; Bhishma Kund, said to be where Bhishma rested on a bed of arrows; and Jyotisar, the site of the Gita's teachings. The circuit extends beyond Haryana to encompass heritage sites in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, including Hastinapur, Mathura, and Badrinath.

Infrastructure upgrades, such as enhanced roads, modern amenities, and improved lighting, are underway to ensure pilgrims and tourists have a comfortable experience. Haryana’s tourism department is also developing interactive offerings, including guided tours, cultural performances, and multimedia exhibits that bring Mahabharata stories to life. This project aligns with India’s broader effort to promote heritage tourism by developing religious and cultural circuits to attract both domestic and international visitors.

The revitalization of these Mahabharata-linked sites is expected to transform Kurukshetra into a premier global pilgrimage destination, boosting the local economy, generating employment, and preserving cultural heritage. With enriched facilities and compelling storytelling, Kurukshetra is set to become a focal point of ancient Indian history and spirituality, sharing the Mahabharata’s enduring wisdom and values with generations to come.
