In light of the ongoing closure of several airports across India for commercial operations, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has issued a nationwide advisory mandating heightened security protocols at all airports and for all airlines.

Effective immediately, passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure to ensure a smooth check-in and boarding process. Check-in counters will close 75 minutes before flight departure, and all passengers must present valid, government-approved photo ID at entry points.

The advisory also restricts cabin baggage to a single handbag weighing no more than 7 kg, in addition to checked luggage. In a significant move, secondary security checks at the boarding gate — commonly known as ladder point checking — have been made compulsory for all flights, supplementing existing primary screenings.

To further bolster terminal security, BCAS has banned visitor entry into airport terminals and suspended the sale of visitor entry tickets. The directive also emphasizes the 100% operational readiness of CCTV systems and calls for the deployment of in-flight security officers on select flights based on a system of prioritization and randomization.

Security has also been stepped up outside terminal buildings. BCAS has urged enhanced surveillance at the city side of airports in coordination with local law enforcement agencies.

Furthermore, the aviation security authority has directed airports and airlines to strengthen the verification of Passenger Name Records (PNRs), closely examine both passenger and cargo manifests, and carry out comprehensive inspections of aircraft and onboard catering services before departure.

Special attention is being given to cargo operations, with stricter measures at cargo terminals and general aviation facilities. Shipments originating from high-risk areas will undergo multiple screening layers, and stakeholders have been urged to remain extra vigilant.

These measures come amid heightened national security concerns ensuring the safety of air travelers and aviation infrastructure across the country.
