In a landmark initiative, the Himachal Pradesh government has unveiled plans to build India’s longest ropeway, linking 11 stations across the state.

Himachal Pradesh, known for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant tourism, is set to make headlines with the upcoming launch of India’s longest ropeway. This ambitious project aims to connect 11 scenic destinations, enhancing accessibility and transforming travel across the state’s mountainous terrain.

The proposed ropeway will span over 40 kilometers, making it the longest in the country stretching between Parwanoo and Shimla. Designed to link key tourist hubs, the project aims to reduce travel time and curb traffic congestion that plagues the current 90 km route between Parwanoo and Shimla.

The Himachal Pradesh Government has received INR 5,571 crore for the ropeway project. The ropeway with an initial capacity of transporting 904 passengers per hour in each direction will be connecting key places including Tara Devi (Goyal Motors), Tara Devi Temple, Shoghi, Waknaghat, Waknaghat IT City, Karol Ka Tibba, Solan, Barog, Dagshai Cantonment, Jabali, and Parwanoo.

Developed through a public-private partnership model, by 2030 the ropeway is expected to become operational. The ropeway will feature either a mono-cable detachable gondola (MDG) system, accommodating 8 to 10 passengers, or the advanced tri-cable 3S technology, capable of carrying up to 25 passengers per cabin.

Beyond boosting tourism, the ropeway is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, benefiting local communities. It will also contribute to reducing the environmental impact caused by vehicular traffic in ecologically sensitive areas.

The project, currently under development, is part of Himachal Pradesh’s broader strategy to enhance its infrastructure and promote sustainable tourism. Once operational, it will not only set a benchmark for similar projects in India but will also further cement the state’s position as a premier tourist destination.
