In a historic milestone for Jammu and Kashmir, the region’s first Vande Bharat Express completed its trial run from Katra to Srinagar.
Years of relentless effort, engineering ingenuity, and visionary planning have culminated in the realization of a long-awaited dream: rail connectivity to Kashmir. The specially-designed Vande Bharat Express recently completed its trial run, marking a historic moment for Indian Railways and the region.
On its maiden trial run, the train arrived at Srinagar station in the Nowgam area, having begun its journey from Katra in Jammu. This milestone journey included traversing key sections such as the Anji Khad Bridge and the Chenab Bridge, showcasing the monumental achievements of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.
Taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Anji Khad Bridge, a feat of engineering with its 331-meter-high pylon, joins one of the two highest railway bridges in the world, alongside the Chenab bridge at Kauri, cementing India’s status as a leader in infrastructure, development.
Designed to meet the operational challenges of Jammu and Kashmir's extreme weather, this Vande Bharat train is equipped with several additional features. Advanced heating systems ensure water and bio-toilet tanks do not freeze, maintain vacuum systems with warm air, and support optimal air-brake performance in sub-zero temperatures. The windshield incorporates embedded heating elements for automatic defrosting, ensuring the driver’s visibility even during harsh winters.
Like its counterparts operating across India, this train boasts fully air-conditioned coaches, automatic plug doors, mobile charging points, and other passenger-centric amenities, making travel both comfortable and convenient.
This train represents a crucial step in bridging geographical and economic divides, connecting the Kashmir Valley to the national railway network and paving the way for enhanced development and integration.
