Sikkim Ramps Up Infrastructure for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Nathu La.
The Sikkim government has fast-tracked infrastructure development to facilitate the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Nathu La Pass, a vital Himalayan route connecting India with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The pilgrimage, which has been on hold for five years, is set to resume this year.
The Yatra, which holds deep religious significance for Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists, was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and later because of military tensions along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.
To ensure a smooth and safe journey for pilgrims, the state is developing key infrastructure, including two acclimatization centers between Gangtok and Nathu La. Additionally, the construction of other travel amenities is underway.
Officials from the forest, tourism, and rural development departments are actively involved, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and well-managed route. Known for its tranquility and robust road networks, Sikkim offers a unique and secure experience for yatris choosing the Nathu La route.
This year, a total of 15 batches of pilgrims will undertake the journey—10 batches of 50 pilgrims each via Sikkim’s Nathu La Pass and five batches through Uttarakhand’s Lipulekh Pass.
Sources indicate that several development plans for the region have been discussed, with a comprehensive plan to be submitted to the Tourism Department for further action.
The renewed focus on infrastructure and safety aims to re-establish Nathu La as a preferred route for the spiritual journey to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake, fostering religious and regional development.
