Travel disrupted as IMD issues Red Alert amidst heavy downpour in Kerala.

Heavy-Rainfall alert in Kerala

Kerala is on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued ‘Red’ alerts for multiple districts, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days. Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod are expected to bear the brunt of the intense weather system, with the potential for flash floods and landslides.

The IMD attributes the heavy downpours to a strengthening western wind system and the formation of a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the Odisha coast. This system is likely to intensify into a deep depression within 24 hours, potentially prolonging the adverse weather across the state.

In anticipation of severe weather, authorities have ordered the closure of all educational institutions in Kasaragod, Kannur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Wayanad. These districts are among the most affected, with rainfall intensity expected to exceed 204.4 mm in 24 hours—qualifying as “extremely heavy rainfall” under IMD guidelines.

Travelers currently in Kerala or planning to visit are urged to reconsider their plans. IMD radar forecasts indicate that Idukki and Ernakulam may witness intense thunderstorms and heavy showers, with wind speeds reaching up to 50 km/h. Kannur is also likely to see moderate rainfall and gusts up to 40 km/h.

The IMD has advised the public to stay vigilant and follow updates from official sources. Residents in vulnerable areas, particularly those prone to landslides and flooding, are advised to take necessary precautions. Emergency services have been placed on standby as the state prepares to navigate the impact of this escalating weather system.
