India’s third-largest city, Kolkata has gained the spotlight for recording the lowest number of cognizable offences per lakh population. The status was conferred to this 330–year–old metropolis after comparing the stats with 19 major cities in India. The cognizable crimes include cases registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code and SLL (Special and Local Laws).

However, this recent announcement does not claim that the city has a zero crime rate, it only states that the criminal cases reported are the least in number. Following Kolkata is Pune in Maharashtra and Hyderabad in Telangana.

Shashi Panja, state minister mentioned that Kolkata has been successful in maintaining the safety norms due to the proactive decisions of the government. She further added, “CM Mamta Banerjee has always prioritized empowerment for all sections and gender security. Our government is progressive and non-discriminatory. We feel proud that Kolkata Police is receiving this recognition. Just think of the just-concluded Durga Puja when millions descended on the city but not one incident got reported.”

The main concern for the city now is the increase in crimes against women as the number of cases rose from 1,783 in 2021 to 1,890 in 2022, the report stated. While it is nearly impossible for any city to be completely crime-free.  In such a scenario, Kolkata serves as a silver lining for travellers keen on peacefully exploring an Indian city

Kolkata, one of the most artistic, intellectual, and culturally rich cities in Indi has always deserved special recognition. This recent announcement comes as a piece of good news for the ones who haven’t been a part of the Kolkata experience. The splendid colonial-era edifices, the millennial residents, and the thespian character of this city make it a true allure and an Indian tourist destination worth uncovering.
