Lakshadweep Islands to undergo a major upgrade as India plans an INR 3,600-crore-plus infrastructure upgrade to transform the group of Islands into a tourism hub.
In a significant development for the Lakshadweep Islands, the Union Government has approved a whopping INR 3,600 crore for a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade, focusing on bolstering the islands' connectivity and port facilities. The archipelago, nestled in the Arabian Sea, is set to undergo transformative changes aimed at fostering economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
The allocated funds will be channeled into various key areas, with a major emphasis on the development of port facilities at Androth, Kalpeni, and Kadmat Islands. And also involves the construction of beachfront and peripheral roads at Kadamat Island (East), Agatti Island (East), and Kavaratti Island is also in focus.
The existing ports will undergo modernization, making them more adept at handling increased cargo traffic and accommodating larger vessels. This strategic move is expected to boost trade, improve logistical efficiency, and open new avenues for economic activities in the region.
The Lakshadweep Islands, known for their pristine natural beauty and unique marine biodiversity, have the potential to become a thriving hub for tourism. The infrastructure upgrade is expected to enhance tourism-related amenities, attracting more visitors and bolstering the local economy.
The funds for this significant development are being sourced from the Sagarmala scheme for port development. A total of 13 projects have been identified for the 36 Lakshadweep islands, which cover an area of 32 square kilometers and are located 220-440 km off the Kerala coast in the Arabian Sea.
