Marina Beach Revamped: Chennai Eyes Blue Flag Certification

Chennai’s Marina Beach Undergoes Major Revamp worthy of Blue Flag certification. 

Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach sported a fresh new look featuring a host of revamped amenities aimed at transforming the site into a Blue Flag-certified beach. Now families can relax in shell-shaped chairs, children are free to play under bamboo umbrellas, and couples can snap pictures at heart-shaped selfie spots, soaking themselves in the revitalized atmosphere.

The ₹7.31 crore upgrade, spread across 20 acres under the Teynampet zone, includes 20 bamboo shade umbrellas, 40 reclining chairs, 12 benches, four watchtowers, 24 dustbins, a main archway, a meditation centre, a reading room, and two selfie points. Efforts to enhance accessibility include 12 wheelchairs for persons with disabilities, accessible sports areas, and inclusive play equipment such as flat slides and rotor swings, available across four locations.

Additional features such as outdoor gyms, separate breastfeeding rooms, toilets, and showers for all genders and disabilities, a first-aid centre, and a water vending machine ensure comfort and safety for all. To uphold hygiene, 82 sanitation workers supported by nine cleaning machines work in shifts from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. A private contractor will manage ongoing maintenance.

Wooden planks have been replaced with sustainable porta mats to provide safer and eco-friendly pathways. The beach has met the Ministry of Environment’s BEAMS programme criteria and expects certification in three months. Once certified, Marina will serve as a model for sustainable beach tourism in India, with similar plans for Thiruvanmiyur, Palavakkam, and Uthandi beaches.
