Mumbai is set to take a significant leap in its urban development by introducing the city’s first-ever elevated forest walkway at Malabar Hill.
This green infrastructure initiative aims to enhance the city's eco-tourism appeal and provide residents with a tranquil escape amidst nature, right in the heart of the bustling metropolis. The project, spearheaded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), with a budget of INR 25 crore is nearing completion and is set to open by the end of this year.
The elevated walkway will traverse the dense forest in the Malabar Hill region of Mumbai, connecting Kamala Nehru Park to Doongerwadi, offering panoramic views of the cityscape and the Arabian Sea. Stretching approximately 705 meters, the walkway will be constructed using eco-friendly materials to ensure minimal disruption to the existing flora and fauna.
Designed with nature enthusiasts and walkers in mind, the walkway will feature strategically placed observation decks, benches, and informative boards highlighting the biodiversity of the region. The initiative is part of Mumbai's broader commitment to improving green spaces and enhancing urban livability.
A standout feature of the walkway is its dedicated birdwatching area, where visitors can admire the region's rich and diverse birdlife. Additionally, a glass-bottom deck provides breathtaking views of the lush forest below, adding to the unique experience.
Malabar Hill, known for its rich biodiversity and serene environs, is home to a variety of native plant species and birdlife. The forest walkway is expected to become a haven for birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers.
Officials have emphasized that the project adheres to stringent environmental guidelines, ensuring sustainable development. The walkway will also be an educational platform for raising awareness about Mumbai’s ecological heritage.
This innovative green corridor is a testament to Mumbai’s efforts to balance urban growth with environmental conservation. The elevated forest walkway promises to be a landmark attraction, reinforcing the city’s image as a forward-thinking and environmentally conscious metropolis.
