Shimla is all set to take a groundbreaking step in urban transportation with the addition of the world’s second-largest ropeway, the 32 km long, first longest is located in Bolivia, South America.

Led by the Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation (RTDC), this ambitious initiative is scheduled to begin in March 2025. The project not only aims to ease traffic congestion and boost efficient travel in the mountains but also generate employment opportunities in the region. 

Here are ten fascinating facts about this remarkable development:

World's second largest ropeway: The ropeway, once completed, will be the second-largest in the world revolutionizing travel within the region.

Budget: Spanning over 13.79 km and costing INR 1734.70 crore, the project features 13 boarding and de-boarding stations along with one turning station connecting the heart of Shimla to the tranquil surroundings of Kufri.

Tourism Boost: Expected to attract tourists from across the globe, the ropeway will provide unparalleled views of the Himalayan landscape, enhancing Shimla’s allure as a premier travel destination.

Investment: As per reports 20% of the project’s cost will be covered by Himachal Government amounting to around INR 346.94 crore and the remaining 80% will be financed through a loan from the New Development Bank.

Capacity: At the initial stages the ropeway will handle 2,000 passengers per hour, with plans to expand this capacity to 6000 for two-way travel by 2059.

Environmental Impact: The project is designed with eco-friendliness in mind. Efforts are being made to minimize the environmental footprint, ensuring that the natural beauty of the region remains preserved.

Economic Benefits: Besides boosting tourism, the ropeway is expected to create 250 direct jobs and over 20,000 indirect employment opportunities for locals, contributing to the region’s economic development. 

Route: The ropeway will include 13 boarding stations, such as Taradevi, Judicial Complex, Chakkar, Tutikandi, New ISBT, Railway Station, and others, ensuring widespread connectivity throughout Shimla.

Transportation: the ropeway will ease congestion and facilitate journeying across the mountains and is expected to be a milestone in the town's transportation development.

Global Standing: Once operational, Shimla's ropeway will position the city on the global map, second only to the Mi Teleférico in Bolivia, showcasing India’s capability in developing world-class infrastructure.
