Surat, city in the Indian state of Gujarat, has recently earned the prestigious ‘Swachh Vayu Survekshan 2024’ title, underscoring its commitment to environmental sustainability and clean air.
This accolade, part of India’s Swachh Bharat Mission, highlights Surat’s exceptional efforts in improving air quality and managing pollution effectively. The Swachh Vayu Survekshan is a national assessment which was introduced in 2019. It assesses cities based on their initiatives to improve air quality and reduce particulate matter. The evaluation considers various factors including solid waste management, road dust control, construction waste management, emissions from vehicles and industries, awareness programs, and overall improvements in air quality, among others.
Over the past five years, Surat has invested nearly INR 5,000 crores in projects aimed at improving air quality. These efforts include deploying mechanical sweepers that remove 4,200 metric tons of dust annually and integrating electric vehicles into 35% of the garbage collection fleet, resulting in an annual reduction of 7,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, the city has established 50 electric vehicle charging stations to support its transition to cleaner energy.
With support from the World Resources Institute, Surat has implemented 280 clean construction projects aimed at reducing natural resource consumption and managing construction and demolition waste. Out of the 600 planned electric buses for the city, 580 are already in operation, contributing to an annual reduction of 66 metric tons in emissions.
Community involvement has been pivotal in Surat’s success. The local government has engaged citizens through awareness campaigns, encouraging sustainable practices and participation in environmental conservation. Educational programs and workshops have fostered a sense of responsibility among residents, amplifying the impact of the city's environmental policies.
