Visakhapatnam's Rushikonda Beach has successfully regained its prestigious Blue Flag certification following a brief suspension due to maintenance and safety concerns.

Visakhapatnam’s renowned Rushikonda Beach has regained its coveted Blue Flag certification after a temporary suspension earlier this year. The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) revoked the beach’s certification in mid-February 2025 following visitor complaints about inadequate sanitation, malfunctioning facilities, and insufficient safety measures. The suspension served as a wake-up call for authorities to address these critical issues.

In response, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department launched extensive corrective measures in collaboration with local municipal bodies. These included upgrading waste management systems, repairing restrooms and changing facilities, enhancing security with increased patrols and CCTV surveillance, and implementing an effective stray animal control program. Traffic management improvements and expanded parking facilities were also introduced to handle the growing number of visitors, particularly during peak seasons.

On March 24, 2025, the Blue Flag was officially reinstated at Rushikonda Beach, marking a significant achievement for the region. During the official ceremony, authorities emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards to retain the certification, which is expected to boost international tourism. They also called for public participation in preserving the beach’s cleanliness and safety to ensure its long-term sustainability.

The Blue Flag certification is a globally recognized eco-label awarded by the Denmark-based FEE to beaches that meet strict environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria. Rushikonda Beach first earned this prestigious status in 2020, highlighting its commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship.

The reinstatement of the certification strengthens Visakhapatnam’s reputation as a responsible tourism hub and adds to India’s growing list of Blue Flag-certified beaches, which include Puri Beach in Odisha, Kovalam Beach in Tamil Nadu, and Radhanagar Beach in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Moving forward continued community engagement and conservation efforts will be essential in upholding the high standards required to retain this distinguished recognition. Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to actively participate in conservation initiatives, adhere to guidelines, and contribute to keeping Rushikonda Beach a pristine and sustainable environment for all to enjoy.
