Coorg is always an excellent choice for weekend getaways. With its dense forests and gushing waterfalls, it is sure to charm you. A spectacular place to visit here is the seat of the district of Coorg—the hilly town of Madikeri. With its panoramic viewpoints, lush greenery, and majestic mountains, Madikeri is like paradise on earth. A magnificent structure that you should definitely visit is the Madikeri Fort. Read on to know more about it.

Among the most important places to see in Madikeri is the Madikeri Fort. Engross your kids with the exciting stories of this fort. They will surely enjoy the characters of their history textbook coming alive. The place was originally a mud structure built by Mudduraja, the Haleri ruler in the 17th Century. Later, Tipu Sultan, the Sultan of Mysore, rebuilt the fort using granite. He named it as Jaffarabad. In 1790, the fort was confiscated by Dodda Veerarajendra, the king of Coorg who defeated Tipu Sultan. In 1834, the fort came under the British rule after they captured Coorg.
Today the fort is the site of the Municipal Headquarters of Coorg. However, it still retains some of its previous charm. It is visible from just about all the resorts in Madikeri and is circular in shape. Two beautiful elephants cut out of rock guard the entrance. It has a hexagonal palace built by Immadi Lingaraja Odeyar, the Department of Archaeology’s museum, and a church that was built in 1855 and has now been converted into a museum. While trekking is an adventurous way to reach this fort, if you are travelling with younger kids, you could also head to the hill station via road. The view from the fort is also spectacular. Don’t forget to carry a picnic lunch so that you can continue sightseeing in Madikeri and at the same time, enjoy its lush landscape.
