Beautiful Places In and Around Coorg

Coorg, also known as Kodagu, is a gorgeous hill station that’s perfect for family vacations. Right from Irupu Falls to Nagarhole National Park, it boasts an array of sites to see and things to do that are enjoyable for all age groups. Coorg’s points of interest include picturesque coffee plantations, wildlife sanctuaries, and magnanimous waterfalls to keep everyone enthralled.

Best time to visit

Coorg’s weather is pleasant throughout the year. However, each season is special for something specific. October to March is best for outdoor activities like trekking while March and April are great to see the entire hill station adorned with white coffee flower. During the monsoon months of June to September, Coorg witnesses heavy rainfall and the gushing waterfalls enhance the city’s beauty. Here are some of the must-visit spots in and around Coorg:

1. Raja’s Seat

Situated in Madikeri, the district headquarters of Coorg, is this fun garden filled with seasonal flowers. It’s where locals come to relax and watch the sunset as the garden is located on the edge of a cliff. The view from here is so beautiful that even the King of Coorg couldn’t escape its charms! There’s a toy train here that’s sure to keep your kids entertained. The main market is a short walk away where you can shop for spices, coffee, and local handicrafts.

2. Bylakuppe

About 40km from Madikeri is the Tibetan settlement of Bylakuppe. You can head here to enjoy Tibetan cuisine and say a prayer at the Namdroling Monastery, which is home to an awe-inspiring 18m golden Buddha statue. It’s a wonderful place to teach your children about the Buddhist culture and way of life. It’s also called “golden temple” because of the golden inlay work in its design.

3. Dubare Elephant Camp

This elephant camp is a delightful place to visit with your children as they will be fascinated looking at the animals splashing water into the Cauvery river. This place makes for a fun picnic spot where you can relax and bond together as a family.

4. Abbey Falls

This spectacular waterfall cascades down from a height of 70feet and makes for a stunning view. Surrounding it are the lofty Western Ghats, which provide a much verdant landscape to go for walks and treks. There’s also a suspension bridge that offers the best vantage point for photographs. Apart from Abbey falls there are many beautiful waterfalls in Coorg such as Irrupu Falls and Mallalli Falls.

5. Coffee plantation tour

When in Coorg, a visit to a coffee plantation is an implied must. The hill station is filled with gorgeous plantations where you can take your kids to make them learn about the beverage and how its beans are cultivated. These complexes are thriving ecosystems with different types of plants, animals, and insects that are sure to fascinate your children.
